It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the last piece in this Chakra Series! It’s been a lot of fun working on it, and I’m so grateful to those of you who have taken the time to read the articles and given me some feedback on them. Hopefully you’ve been able to get something out of this series, and hopefully you’ve been able to open up your chakras to embark on a path to living a life of balance, connection, and authenticity. Anyway. Let’s talk chakras.
After working our way up the spine—beginning with the root chakra at the very base—we’ve made our way to the top to talk about the crown chakra.
Have you ever had the feeling of being in perfect flow with the Universe (or God, Creator, Source, etc.)? Have you had moments in which you feel perfectly connected to all that is—moments in which you experience what seem to be miracles, in which you become aware that you are simply a spirit living inside a human body? This sense of connection has everything to do with the crown chakra.
The Crown Chakra
Let’s remember that chakras are essentially swirling centers of energy within our bodies that mark the convergence of the physical and spiritual aspects of our beings, and that each chakra carries its own particular energy and purpose.
Located at the very top of the head, the crown chakra (sahaswara) is the energetic center of our body that connects us to the universal energy that encompasses everything in existence, including our higher selves. It is the chakra that brings us the awareness that we are pure consciousness, all-expansive, and literally one with the energy that created us. It assures us that God (or the Universe, Creator, Source, etc.) is not something that lives outside us, but rather, that it is us. We are like drops of water in an endless sea. Even though we may be individual drops, we are inextricably connected to the ocean around us, and within ourselves, we contain every aspect and property of the sea at large. In other words, as it might be said by Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One, “I’m one with the force. The force is with me.”
The crown chakra is also sometimes called the thousand-petal lotus chakra because—as the lotus flower is able to grow through muddy water—when our crown chakra is open, we are able to grow through the confines of the physical body, mind, and ego, and move toward enlightenment. It’s very powerful. The color that symbolizes this chakra can be either a bright white or a royal violet, although gold is also sometimes associated with it.
Signs of Imbalance
Since the crown chakra is the one which connects us to all that is, it is crucial that all the chakras below it be balanced and/or cleared before this one. It all begins with the root chakra, and it moves up: First, we must feel safe and secure (root). Then we must be able to express the life force that is our creativity (sacral). We need to come into our personal power (solar plexus), to live with compassion (heart), to speak our highest truth (throat), and to listen to our intuition (third eye) in order to allow ourselves to be truly whole. It’s kind of similar to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, for those who are familiar with it. We can’t reach self-actualization if we haven’t yet had our basic needs fulfilled. So please. If you haven’t gotten a chance to read through the other articles in this series, I HIGHLY recommend that—if you’re really looking to unblock your chakras and live a life of balance, connection, and authenticity—you go back and read the rest of the series in order (root chakra, sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra, heart chakra, throat chakra, and third eye chakra). It’s crucial. I should say, it’s not always necessary to clear your chakras in a particular order. Sometimes, you might feel like you have a blockage in your heart chakra that needs to be taken care of. Sometimes, you might feel like it’s your sacral chakra. You are the only person who knows yourself so deeply, so do the healing work that you intuitively feel you need to do. It’s possible that doing work on one chakra can naturally balance the energy flow at other chakras, as well. However, to heal the crown chakra in particular, I definitely recommend making sure the other six are taken care of first.
Anyway, signs of an imbalanced crown chakra may include:
Feeling disconnected from your Source/spirit, feeling disconnected from your body (if the crown chakra is overactive), loneliness, inability to connect with others, inability to set or maintain goals, nerve pain, neurological disorders, Alzheimer’s, recurring headaches, migraines, schizophrenia, depression, and insomnia.
If you experience any of these symptoms, there may be a blockage in your crown chakra. Thankfully, there are a variety of ways to balance and heal it.
Unblocking the Crown Chakra
I have talked about meditation in every single article of this series. It’s an effective and important tool for balancing the chakras. However, with the crown chakra, it becomes even more significant. Here’s why: In order for us to fully connect with our Source, we need to cultivate silence in our lives. During meditation, we are able to turn down the voices in our heads, sit quietly, and simply be with the energy within and without us. Taking time each day to cultivate silence is the most powerful way to heal the crown chakra and connect with our higher selves.
In order to balance the crown chakra, sit or lie down comfortably with your eyes closed and your palms facing upward (having your palms face up puts you in a position to receive the healing energy of the Universe). Take a few deep, cleansing breaths in order to clear your mind and center yourself. When you’re ready, allow your breathing to be gentler, and bring your attention to your inhalations and exhalations. Cultivate silence, and feel the peace within your mind, body, and spirit. When it feels right, introduce the light. Visualize a bright, expansive white (or violet) light pouring into your body from the crown of your head. Let the light penetrate your entire being, and breathe as you experience connection with all that is. As the light fills you, it heals you, and it reaffirms your connection to Source. You are healed. You are whole. You are one with the Universe, and the Universe is one with you.
Ideally, you should aim to meditate every day. Even if you can only squeeze in ten minutes, it’s an important practice that can bring such a great deal of balance and healing into your life.
Although meditation is arguably the best way to open the crown chakra, the other tools I’ve been talking about throughout this series can certainly amplify the healing energy and be effective.
Affirmations are a powerful tool for healing energy blockages, as I’ve mentioned many times before. I’ve been utilizing affirmations quite a bit lately to heal certain emotional blockages, and they’ve most definitely helped me by reminding me to keep my thoughts high, bright, and clear.
Recite these affirmations to amplify healing in the crown chakra:
I am whole. God (or Source, Universe, Creator, etc.) is within me. I am love. I am one with the Universe, and the Universe is one with me. I am worthy of divine love and energy. I am loved unconditionally. I receive and accept guidance from my angels and spirit guides. I am spiritual truth. I let my light shine. I am connected with my higher self. I am pure consciousness. I am here on Earth to make a difference.
You may recite these affirmations whenever you need to, but in my experience, it’s particularly effective to start and end the day with them.
Like affirmations, wearing or meditating with crystals can help amplify the healing energy that is cultivated through the silence of meditation. I have definitely found that wearing and keeping certain crystals around has raised the vibrational frequency of the space around me, leaving me feeling joyful, peaceful, and healed. In general, chakras can be balanced by using crystals that match them in color (and therefore, vibration).
Look for these crystals to help heal and balance the crown chakra:
Selenite, clear quartz, amethyst, diamond, and sugilite.
Aromatherapy, as I’ve mentioned throughout this series, is a great tool for balancing chakras and experiencing healing. Many people place great faith in the healing properties of essential oils, for example.
Look for these essential oils to help amplify the healing of the crown chakra:
Vetiver, gurjum myrrh, sandalwood, frankincense, rosewood, jasmine, lavender, neroli, rose, cedarwood, and helichrysum.
Yoga is a wonderful practice for opening up blocked chakras. In my own personal experience, yoga has been one of the practices that leaves me feeling healed (or at least improved) almost instantly, probably because it is so closely linked with meditation. There have been times when I have been on my yoga mat, doing certain poses, and suddenly, I feel a release of energy, almost as if I need to cry. I’m pretty sure this is a semi-common experience that is a sign of energy flowing and chakras being unblocked. If you’ve never done yoga before, it might be a good idea to give it a try.
Try these poses to help balance and heal the crown chakra:
Lotus pose, corpse pose, fish pose, and tree pose.
And, amazingly, with that, the Chakra Series culminates. If you have any thoughts, comments, or questions, please don’t hesitate to leave me a comment down below! It has been such a fun and enlightening journey for me to learn more about our seven major chakras, share the information with you, and go through my own healing processes. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share this part of me with you. I hope you’ve been able to get something out of this series, and I hope it leaves you feeling more “you” than you’ve ever been. You are a perfect product of the universal energy that surrounds us. You are royal; you are divine. May you always remember.
Just a note: Since this Thursday is a holiday, there won’t be any new material up here. I hope everyone (in the U.S., at least) has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
